Connectors of Condition

Connectors or conjunctions are words that are used to connect two parts of a sentence together.

Connectors of condition are used to show the results when something happens or when something does not happen.

The two conjuctions used to show conditions are "if" and "unless".

There will be two parts in sentences joined by these two conjunctions.

Conjunction - IF

One part would be the condition. The other part would be the result if the condition is fulfilled.

Let us look at the example of If.

Example:
If I pass my examinations, my father will reward me.

The condition is that "I must pass my examination".

What is the result if that condition is fulfilled? --> My father will reward me.

Exercise 1
Identify the condition for each of the following

  1. You will get a mystery prize if you complete the quiz.
  2. If a contestant presses the buzzer first, he or she will then be given a chance to solve the puzzle.
  3. I would have attended the party if she had asked me earlier.

Conjunction - Unless

Similarly, for sentences joined by unless, there will be two parts in the sentence.

One part of the sentence shows the condition. The other part shows what would happen if something does not happen.

Example:
Unless you start saving now, you will not be able to buy the gift for Melissa.

The condition is that "You must start saving now".

What is the result if that condition is not fulfilled? --> You will not be able to buy the gift for Melissa.

Exercise 2
Identify the condition for each of the following

  1. Unless your father agrees, you are not allowed to watch television tonight.

  2. Unless you have completed the survey, you are not allowed to leave the room.
  3. You have to attend the rehearsal unless you have permission from the teacher to be excused.
